Kona International Airport to UKIRT Office Driving Directions

There are two ways to travel to Hilo from Kona — you can take Highway 19 or Saddle Road.
Whichever route you choose, please drive carefully! Heavy rains, thick fog, and twisty mountain roads can challenge even the best drivers.

Exiting Kona Airport:

Take the Airport Exit Road to the traffic light at Highway 19 (aka the Queen Kaahumanu Highway).

Turn right onto Highway 19; continue for 3.1 miles.

Turn left onto Hina Lani Street; continue for 3.6 miles.

(You could turn left on Kaiminani Drive to get to the Hawaii Belt Road, but we do not recommend using Kaiminani Drive because you would be forced to take a left turn onto the Hawaii Belt Road without the benefit of a traffic light.)

Turn left onto the Hawaii Belt Road (aka Mamalahoa Highway).

The Highway 19 route:

Continue on the Hawaii Belt Road/Highway 19 for 89.5 miles, through the towns of Waimea and Honoka’a.

Turn right onto Waianuenue Avenue.

Turn left onto Komohana Street.

Turn left onto Nowelo Street.

Turn left onto N. A’ohoku Place.

The IFA/UKIRT office is at the end of the street. Turn left into our driveway and park in any available space in the upper or front parking lots. Please come to the main entrance facing the road and ring the doorbell.

Please call us at 1 808 932-2300 for further directions or assistance.

The Saddle Road route:

Continue on the Hawaii Belt Road for 27 miles.

Turn right onto Saddle Road and enjoy the next 47 miles.

Proceed straight ahead onto E. Puainako Street.

Turn left onto Komohana Street.

Turn right onto Nowelo Street.

Turn left onto N. A’ohoku Place.

The EAO/UKIRT office is the second building on the left. Turn left into our driveway and park in any available space in the side or rear parking lots. Our main entrance faces the side parking lot. Please ring the doorbell.
